Bonding With Baby: How to Tell if the Connection is There

Ali Vogt, MFT

As a new mom, one of the most common concerns is whether you've truly bonded with your baby. It's a deep, primal connection that can feel elusive in the early days of parenthood. But rest assured, the bond between you and your little one is likely stronger than you realize.

Bonding doesn't always happen in a big, dramatic moment. Instead, it's a gradual process that unfolds over time. Some key signs that the bond is developing:

A hippo and its calf rest in murky water. The calf nuzzles the mother's head, creating a serene atmosphere.

Soothing Instincts

When your baby cries, do you feel an innate urge to comfort them? This desire to soothe and calm your little one is a sure sign of bonding. Your brain and body are hardwired to respond to your baby's needs.

Emotional Attunement

Do you find yourself feeling concerned about your baby's well-being and safety? Caring deeply about your child's needs and emotions is a hallmark of a strong bond.

Moments of Joy

Even amidst the exhaustion, do you sometimes find yourself gazing at your baby with a sense of awe and pure joy? These little pockets of blissful connection are powerful bonding experiences.

If you're experiencing these signs, trust that the bond is there, even if it doesn't feel as strong or immediate as you expected. Parenthood is a learning curve, and the bond between you and your baby will only deepen with time.

Be patient with yourself and your baby. Bonding is a journey, not a destination. As long as you're showing up with love and attunement, that precious connection will continue to grow.
