Fostering a Deeper Bond with Your Baby

Ali Vogt, MFT

In the whirlwind of new parenthood, it's not unusual to feel like the emotional connection with your baby is taking time to develop. Whether you're navigating challenges like colic, breastfeeding issues, or just general exhaustion, it can be hard to feel that primal sense of bonding.

But rest assured, there are proactive steps you can take to foster a deeper emotional bond with your little one, even in those early sleep-deprived days. Try incorporating some of these practices into your daily routine:

Make Skin-to-Skin Contact

Holding your baby against your bare skin stimulates the release of oxytocin, the "love hormone" that facilitates bonding. Even 10-15 minutes of skin-to-skin time can work wonders.

Maintain Eye Contact

Gazing into your baby's eyes not only helps them feel secure, but it allows you to attune to their emotional cues. Make eye contact while feeding, rocking, or simply sitting together.

Narrate Your Day

Describe out loud what you're doing as you care for your baby - "Now we're getting ready for a nap," or "Time for a fresh diaper." This helps your little one feel heard and understood.

Practice Mindful Feeding

Rather than multitasking, be fully present during feedings. Pay attention to your baby's cues, stroke their skin, and make eye contact to foster that intimate connection.

Be Responsive to Cues

When your baby cries or fusses, try to quickly identify and respond to their needs. Knowing you'll meet their demands helps build trust and security.

Bonding takes time, patience, and practice. But by incorporating these simple, intentional practices, you can deepen your emotional connection and help your baby feel safe, soothed, and loved.
